Author - John Steinbeck
Of Mice And Men A fantastic book, compelling characters, annoyingly short. That would surely be most peoples view of John Steinbeck's classic. To understand the book you need to understand the author. John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. was born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. He was of German and Irish descent. He wrote a total of twenty-seven books, including sixteen novels, six non-fiction books and five collections of short stories. He lived through the great depression and it was this time in history that deeply influenced of mice and men. Plot Obviously I can't give too much away but Steinbeck uses great technique in his writing and moves the story on very efficiently. The way different characters interact with each other is one of the main focuses of the short book. The focus of the book is about George and Lennie, two ranch workers who travel around the eastern parts of the USA. They find work on a ranch in the Salinas valley. The book tackles various issues of the time such as discrimination towards black, disabled and female people. Characters All the characters in the book are nicely portrayed and very interesting. There is not much depth too them as it is a short book. They way the interact with each other is very enthralling and is the main theme in the book.George, one of the main characters, is a slender man. He is very self aware and knows how the world works, it is not clear but you are lead to believe he is not very highly educated however he is respected by almost everyone on the ranch. His best friend and work partner Lennie, is a tall, massive person. He is however restricted by being mentally slow. He is compared to a big baby by the only woman on the ranch. Summary Overall it's one of the best books I've ever read. I really didn't want to give much information away as you deserve to read this classic by yourself. John Steinbeck is a great writer and the fusion he creates between people in the story is amazing, especially as the book is only 105 pages long. One note I would make is do not watch the film! I guarantee that it will ruin the book, not that its a bad film its just that your mental image of the book will be way better, my mental image was read dead redemption. Anyway please read this book as it is definitely worth it!!! |
